Introduction to Illumination Painting Workshop

Date/Time

Location

BOMBYX Center for Arts & Equity (130 Pine Street, Florence MA)

Raquy will guide you in creating a small illuminated painting.

Illumination painting is the art of decorating a sacred manuscript with golden motifs such as flowers, leaves, borders, geometric shapes and knots, using primarily gold paint.

Illumination painting has been practiced in many parts of the world since ancient times. Tezhip is derived from the Arabic word zahab, which means gold. Raquy specializes in Ottoman style illumination painting – a skill she learned at the Klasik Art Akademi in Istanbul.

In this workshop we will:

  • Stain a heavy paper with coffee to make it look ancient.
  • Create a traditional design with pencil on tracing paper
  • Transfer it to a coffee-stained final card
  • Fill in the gold, paint the other colors, make the outline, fill in the background
