Berkshire Choral International will present a choral-orchestral concert featuring music of two groundbreaking British composers on Saturday, June 27, 2026 at 7:30 pm at Tillis Performance Hall, Bromery Center for the Arts at UMass Amherst. The program will be guest conducted by Grammy Award-nominated conductor Beth Wil.
Trailblazing composer and women’s suffrage activist Dame Ethel Smyth wrote her exuberant, almost operatic Mass in D in 1891 and it was a work ahead of its time -- as was Smyth herself. Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb, orchestrated by Imogen Holst, is a kaleidoscopic expression of faith with a twist. The fearless individuality of the works of these two gay composers offer a showcase for bold choral singing with full orchestra.
