For ages 14+, open to all level artists with no experience necessary
Block printing with rubber blocks (sometimes referred to as linocut) is a fun and accessible way to customize clothing, tote bags, and other textiles. In this class, we’ll begin by sketching a design on paper, then walk through how to transfer that design onto a carving block. You’ll receive instruction on carving techniques, followed by printing using textile-specific inks. Take the block home so you can continue printing on your own!
If you want to bring something to print on: choose natural fabrics with a tighter weave, such as cotton, linen, hemp, or canvas. Avoid overly textured and synthetic fabrics.
You may bring a printed design no larger than 4x6 inches to transfer onto the block. Designs must be printed in black toner on a laser printer (not inkjet). We will cover how to transfer printed images onto your block. If you don’t plan on transferring it directly to the block, it can be printed in any way you’re able as we can use a tracing paper method to transfer instead.
