In her upcoming show at Easthampton’s Oxbow Gallery in November, Florence-based artist Caren Hyde will exhibit more than 20 paintings and drawings inspired by Iceland’s wild, rugged, and dramatic landscapes that captivated her during recent travels to the country. “The Long Twilight,” the title Hyde has given her first major exhibition at the gallery, seeks to explore the mysterious quality of the light and mood that prevails during Iceland’s summer nights, when the sky never fully darkens and a misty atmosphere takes over the land. “The paintings and drawings of Iceland I will be showing are the culmination of a three-year effort to capture my emotional response to my travels throughout Iceland.” Hyde said. “The country is an increasingly popular destination for landscape painters and photographers that manages to provoke awe and wonder to anyone who has the fortune of seeing the natural world in its rawest state.” For Hyde, the essential component of these artworks is the summer twilight of Iceland, which lasts through the short night into dawn. “During this time, the light over the Icelandic landscape is a misty gray-blue, details diminish, and shapes and space are emphasized,” she said.
Hyde moved to Florence in 2006 and is a native of England, where she graduated Bath Academy of Art in 1986. She has exhibited her work in the U.K. and New York - where she lived for 15 years, as well as elsewhere in the U.S.. She uses acrylic paint in nontraditional ways, using rags, rollers, squeegees, and household items to create abstract textures in her larger works. Hyde describes her smaller-sized drawings as “painting with charcoal.”
Hyde says she has been looking forward to showing her work at the Oxbow since joining the artists-run gallery in January. “The Oxbow Gallery is a fantastic venue that showcases a diverse range of art by skilled local and regional artists.” Hyde said. “I look forward to sharing my appreciation and passion for the Icelandic landscape with those who may have also experienced the same, or perhaps dream about one day traveling to this visually stunning place themselves”. The Oxbow Gallery is located at 40 Cottage Street in Easthampton. Regular gallery hours are Thursday, 12 - 5pm, Friday, 2 - 7pm, Saturday and Sunday, 12 - 5pm. Parking is available in the front of the building and in the parking lot adjacent on Cottage Street. All are welcome.
