Improvisational Quilting Sampler Class

Date/Time

Location

Hoop & Bee (116 Pleasant Street, Suite 209, Easthampton MA)

Taught by guest instructor Sarah King, this six-week workshop introduces improvisational quilting through the structure of a sampler. This class meets 10am-12pm, running from Saturday, October 11th, through Saturday, November 22nd. (Note: There is no class on Saturday, November 1st, as this is the Eastworks Open Studio weekend)

You’ll explore core improv techniques like log cabins, wonky stars, strip piecing, curved seams, and more, reinterpreting each block with a sense of freedom, play, and curiosity, using fabrics that carry meaning.

More than a skill-building course, this class is an invitation to expand and experiment. Drawing inspiration from traditions like boro stitching, the work of the Gee’s Bend quilters, and 19th-century embroidery samplers, you’ll be guided through every step of the quilting process - from piecing to quilting to binding - while learning to listen to and trust your instincts, and respond to the materials in front of you.

Improvisational quilting is about more than breaking the rules. It’s about learning to see beauty in what’s already there, and shaping it with your own voice. You’ll leave class with a small finished quilt (or a table runner or wall hanging) and a deeper connection to your creative process.
