BOMBYX Center for Arts & Equity (130 Pine Street, Florence MA)
Join us for a special free screening of the award-winning documentary Photographic Justice: The Corky Lee Story, celebrating the life and legacy of renowned Chinese American activist photographer Corky Lee. For 50 years, Corky Lee tirelessly documented the celebrations, struggles, and everyday moments of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. With a deep commitment to social justice, Lee used his camera to document the beauty of AAPI cultures, challenge invisibility and demand recognition for AAPI justice issues. His remarkable archive of nearly one million images is a powerful record of the resilience, beauty, and complexity of AAPI lives. This intimate film takes on new relevance in light of the rise in anti-Asian violence starting with the COVID-19 pandemic and continuing today, and reminds us of the positive impact one individual can have raising awareness and advocating for change. Following the screening, stay for a Q&A with Director Jennifer Takaki, Executive Producer George Hirose, and Producer Linda Lew Woo, moderated by Marianne Yoshioka, Dean of the Smith College School for Social Work. This event was made possible through the support of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Asian American Commission, The Sojourner Truth School for Justice Leadership, and the Smith College Office of Inclusion and Equity.
