Saturday March 18 Northampton Arts Inc. Presents Psychedelic Cinema Orchestra Performs SOUTH - ERNEST SHACKLETON AND THE ENDURANCE EXPEDITION Saturday, March 18 at 7:00 pm Come watch a film classic and listen to the soundtrack performed by a live orchestra! If you've been following the news you have probably seen the astounding footage of the newly discovered wreck of Ernest Shackleton's ship, Endurance. The ship has been Lying 10,000 feet deep at the bottom of the Weddell Sea in Antarctica, for more than one hundred years. Amazingly, the video shows the ship looking as fresh as the day it sank. This is the perfect time to revisit the original film shot during the expedition and released in 1919. SOUTH was shot and edited by Frank Hurley, the official photographer for the expedition. His film tells the incredible tale of how the ship got stuck in the ice and sank after the boat was crushed by the expanding ice. The crew spent two years living on the ice and ultimately made their way to the nearest land 800 miles away. Incredibly, every member of the expedition survived the experience and Frank Hurley managed to save many of the stills and motion picture films he shot of the harrowing experience. It is these movies and stills that make up the movie, SOUTH. The film has received a new and exquisite 2K restoration from the British Film Institute. The running time is 81 minutes.
