Klenèngan—a Javanese Musical Party, free and open to all!
The Smith College Gamelan will celebrate 30 years of learning and performing traditional Javanese music with an extended informal performance, modeled in the style of a Javanese klenèngan.
This event is free and open to the public and it is appropriate for all ages. Attendees are encouraged to come and go freely.
Founded in 1995 by Margaret Sarkissian, a Professor of Music at Smith College, and Sumarsam of Wesleyan University, the Smith Gamelan has featured three decades of performances by Five College students and stellar guest performers. The April 18 celebration will include former directors and master musicians of Javanese music, including I. M. Harjito, and Darsono Hadiraharjo.
What is a Javanese gamelan?: A set of instruments comprised of bronze gongs and metallophones, drums, a wooden xylophone, a bowed lute, flutes, and vocalists. Javanese gamelan music ranges from slow and serene to lively and joyful.
