Occupying the intersection of dub, jazz, and folk are Bristol’s Tara Clerkin Trio. While their discography is small, it is perfectly formed: In over just 16 tracks spread over three projects. they carve out a particular sound that sits somewhere between Arthur Russell, Talk Talk, and Robert Wyatt. The song title “World In Delay” (taken from their excellent On The Turning Ground EP) sums up what makes Tara Clerkin Trio’s music so strange and entrancing. It’s as if each song has its own unique atmosphere and gravitational field, where every instrument is drawn into the orbit of the groove. “Marble Walls” and “Brigstow” sprawl and lumber. Pianos, hi-hats, and vocals rise then fall, ringing into silence as if asking you to ponder where they’ve gone. While Sunny-Joe Paradisos from Tara Clerkin Trio denies making psychedelic music, saying that “we are all very engaged with the world around us at the moment in all its infinite minutiae, and psychedelia is more about engaging with the things or concepts which are beyond us,” the roiling layers of Tara Clerkin Trio’s music make for heady listening nonetheless. - Will Ainsley, Bandcamp Daily
