The Black Moon Lilith Project

Date/Time

Location

Kirby Memorial Theater (200 S Pleasant St., Amherst, MA 01002, Amherst MA)

An original, full-length dance theater concert, *The* *Black Moon Lilith Project* consists of two 30 minute works. The first is a trio devised by Jenna Riegel, Sarah Konner and Paul Singh. The second half of the evening is a duet created by Jenna Riegel and Anna Adams Stark. Both pieces take inspiration from mythologies surrounding Lilith and her affiliation with the night owl, the serpent and the wildcat, and the astrological point in space known as Black Moon Lilith. All are associated with wildness, rebellion, a refusal to be restrained and going against the status quo.

Focusing on the symbolism surrounding Lilith, as found in Judaic mythology and later embraced in feminist literature, the duet delves into notions of the untameable or a refusal to conform as experienced in the female body. Lilith’s changing narrative over time (from first woman made from the Earth and then banished from Eden, to demon child murderer, to the empowered feminist icon of gender equality) provides source material for Stark and Riegel’s movement and text-based invention and choreographic explorations. Additionally, the void associated with Black Moon Lilith and the repressed or empty spaces in our stories are explored.

The trio hones in on the particular animals affiliated with Lilith or Black Moon Lilith: the owl, the serpent and the wildcat. Additionally, the mysterious shapeshifter or therianthropic side of Black Moon Lilith is explored via partnering practices like Contact Improvisation, where two dancers bodies become inextricably interconnected through weight sharing and continuous points of contact.

The hope is that the duet and trio will offer two distinct, yet complementary and dialogical investigations of aspects of Black Moon Lilith.
