Led by Luz Elena Mendoza Ramos, Y La Bamba has been making major waves for the last several years with their adventurous Latin experimental rock, suffusing dream pop soundscapes with beguiling cumbia and mariachi rhythms. including a showcase on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert in 2019. Their new album “Lucha” has heavy themes and is deeply personal, but it is effortless to listen to, sounding wonderfully sunbaked as if these songs have always existed, beautiful, mysterious and just out of reach. The Lucha album title translates to “fight” in English and is also a nickname for Luz. The project promises to explore a multitude of concepts: love, queerness, romance, family, identity, ancestral trauma, and healing.
