adrian almquist grew up in Eastern Massachusetts and has been interested in the natural environment, agriculture, crafts, gardening and building since he was in his teens. Over the last 25 years, he has worked as a cook, baker, roofer, gardener, farmer, carpenter, electrician, trail builder, timber framer, and teacher. All of these experiences inform his creative practice. His work spans mediums of sculpture, textiles, ceramics, and mixed media.
In 2021, he was a resident apprentice at the Heartwood School for Timber Framing. In 2023, he was an artist in residence at High Desert Test Sites in Joshua Tree, California. He was selected to join the Valley Creates cohort for the Assets for Artists program through MassMoCA in the fall of 2024. He recently held residencies at Center of Gravity in North Adams, Massachusetts and PADA in Barreiro, Portugal. He is honored to be currently creating work using local materials, through a grant from the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts Valley Creates Project Evolution Grant. He lives in the hills of Western Massachusetts, where he gains inspiration from his local fiber shed, forests, quarries, wood kilns, and thriving arts community.
