Duncan Hurst- Bagpiper

Artist / Creative (Individual)

I’m a professional bagpiper based in Whately, Massachusetts, with over 15 years of experience performing, teaching, and leading in the piping community. I started learning the bagpipes at age ten, studying under Adam Holdaway, and quickly found my place in the Stuart Highland Pipe Band of Wilmington, MA, where I’ve played ever since and have served as pipe major since 2018. Pipe majors are responsible for the overall sound of the band, leading rehearsals, instructing players, and making sure the band is ready for any competition or performance. I am also a member of The Commonwealth Pipes and Drums of Melrose, MA.

I have performed across the United States, Canada, and Scotland, having made many trips to the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow. I hold a degree in Music Education from UMass Amherst and spent several years as a public school band director, working with students from grades 5 through 12.

In addition to playing at weddings, funerals, and events across New England and parts of New York, I offer private instruction to pipers of all levels, from chanter fundamentals to advanced repertoire. Whether I’m performing or teaching, I care deeply about sound, expression, and honoring the moment with music that’s steady, tuned, and full of feeling.
