Ella Nathanael Alkiewicz is a Labrador Inuk creator whose work embodies a lasting commitment to art, education, and the preservation and evolution of Labrador Inuit cultural identity. Alkiewicz bridges the realms of tradition and modern expression, engaging local and global audiences through poetic, visual, and educational work being a Nunatsiavut Gov't beneficiary and dual citizen.
Alkiewicz is both a self-taught poet and visual artist, refining her craft through years of personal and community exploration. Her formal education spans teaching, journalism, Native Studies, and nonfiction writing, which together influence her unique approach and balance of analytical skill with emotional depth. Her artwork spans written word and visual storytelling; her acrylic painting is featured in Tundra Books’ anthology, You Were Made for This World (July 2025).
Her visual practice includes solo and group exhibitions in Massachusetts, as well as international venues in Bulgaria, Istanbul, and Toronto. Alkiewicz’s works have also appeared at The Sphere in Florence, and the North American Indian Center of Boston.
As an educator, Alkiewicz teaches Healing Through Poetry and Indigenous topics at institutions including Amherst College, Mount Holyoke, Smith College, Lesley University, and University of Massachusetts campuses. Her accessible pedagogy invites creativity, identity, and intercultural dialogue among learners of all backgrounds.
Alkiewicz’s scholarly and creative impact extends through published articles in Inuktitut Magazine and poetry displayed at the Smith College Museum of Art, highlighting her interdisciplinary and narrative-driven perspective. Her professional achievements include recognition as a Marquis Who’s Who in America Honored Listee (2025), and numerous grants and residencies, such as the Massachusetts Cultural Council Recovery Grant, ValleyCreates Project Evolution Grant, MVICW Voices of Color fellowship, and the Banff Centre “Write Over Here” residency.
Her life and work remain rooted in Nonotuck lands in Northampton, Mass., where community engagement shapes her vision. Alkiewicz continues to build bridges between generations, disciplines, and cultures, affirming creativity as a collective and restorative force.
